Bark canoes, of Birch or Elm, were indigenous to the native peoples of the Great Lakes and upper eastern areas. Dugout canoes were also prevalent, but the lightweight bark type was more versatile, especially over lengthy portages. Early white traders took full advantage by adopting many native items better suited to wilderness existence than their own.
