Time passes in different ways. In our
modern times, life is governed by the clock. Our goal is to become
more efficient. In the 18th century, the quality of one's life was
measured with regard to the manner of the achievement. For a washerwoman,
time passes slowly, the work is hard, even while the guns of war
are at rest. The time for fighting will come soon enough, but for
now a Highlander officer and his subordinate welcome the quiet moments.
Engaged in pleasant conversation, they are simply "Passing
the Time of Day."
